When a rekey can make sense

You may want a different key after moving, losing a key or ending access for a former occupant or contractor. Rekeying can address that without replacing the full lock, if the cylinder and hardware are suitable.

What rekeying does not fix

It does not repair a damaged door, worn latch, loose hardware or a badly aligned frame. Tell us about sticking, movement or difficulty closing the door so the technician can distinguish an access change from a repair.

Can several locks use the same key?

Sometimes, when the locks are compatible. Mixing brands or cylinder types can limit what can be keyed alike. Count the locks, note whether they currently share a key, and tell us which doors are involved.

Preparing for the visit

  • List the doors and locks you want checked.
  • Have the existing keys available if you have them.
  • Explain any lock damage or operating problems.
  • Confirm permission if you rent or manage the property for someone else.

We can discuss the number of keys required and test the work before the visit is complete.

Rekey or replace?

If the hardware is broken, unsuitable or missing features you need, replacement may be more appropriate. The technician explains the options and total price before work. Our service-call fee is $29; the work depends on the number and type of cylinders and any repairs required.

Questions about lock rekeying

Do I need the old key?

Tell us whether you have it. A missing working key can affect the procedure and price, but it does not automatically rule out a visit.

Is a rekey the same as replacing the lock?

No. Rekeying changes the key that operates a suitable cylinder. Replacement changes the hardware itself.

Can you rekey a rental property?

Yes, where the person arranging the work is authorized to make the change. Confirm the landlord or property manager’s requirements first.
